In the year 1963, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi founded the ashram. He was credited for creating and spreading transcendental meditation. The Liverpool-based Beatles band visited this ashram in 1968 and learned meditation under Maharishi.
Ved Bhavan's features include the dome-shaped building, the graffiti art, and the wall paintings of the Beatles. The walk begins at 2:00 PM and concludes at around 5:30 PM.
The riverfront steps, called ghats provide access for a holy dip and other rituals in the river. A dip in the Ganges is believed to wash away one's sins. As part of the tour, you will walk by cremation ghats, where dead bodies are burned and the Janki Setu bridge.
The original name of the ashram is Chaurasi Kutiya which means 84 meditation huts. It covers 14 acres of land on a cliff by the side of river Ganges.
The Beatles band wrote 48 songs while staying at this ashram and this gave birth to their White Album.
In India, cows are considered a sacred animal that should be protected and cared for. Abandoned, stray, and infertile cows are taken care in shelters which are called goshalas. This goshala is run by Uttaranchal Theerth Vikas Parishad. Around 200 cows are taken care here.
