The ashram was founded in the year 1964 by Yogeshwarananda Saraswati Maharaj. At the age of fourteen he had left home and lived a life of austerity in the Himalayas with a focus on self realization. His specialization was in Raja Yoga.
The riverfront steps, called ghats provide access for a holy dip and other rituals in the river. A dip in the Ganges is believed to wash away one's sins. As part of the tour, you will walk by cremation ghats, where dead bodies are burned and the Janki Setu bridge.

In India, cows are considered a sacred animal that should be protected and cared for. Abandoned, stray, and infertile cows are taken care in shelters which are called goshalas. This goshala is run by Uttaranchal Theerth Vikas Parishad. Around 200 cows are taken care here.
